Railroad lanterns were used as a means of nighttime communication, especially during the times of steam locomotives. Lanterns were meant to be moved and swung by the railroad worker communicate different messages (stop, proceed, apply brakes, etc). Dietz, Adlake, Dressel and Adams & Westlake were some of the companies that produced antique railroad lanterns.
